روز اول ماه مارس ۱۹۸۱ بابی سندز از اعضای ارتش جمهوریخواه ایرلند اعتصاب غذای تاریخی خود را آغاز کرد. از جمله مهم‌ترین خواست‌های او می‌توان به:
– خروج اشغال گران انگلیسی از قسمت شمالی ایرلند
– پوشیدن لباس غیرزندانی
– عدم کار اجباری
– حق اجتماع آزاد زندانیان و مطالعه و آموزش
– حق ملاقات هفتگی، داشتن نامه و بسته
-حق دریافت حکم همانند دیگر زندانیان، اشاره کرد.
سندز پس از ۶۶ روز اعتصاب غذا در زندان بلفاست درگذشت.
