A new wave of arrests hits Iranian scholars and intellectuals

In recent days the Iranian security forces have arrested at least four progressive academics, scholars, and writers who have been prominent advocates of social justice, and opponents of war and foreign domination. Charged with “threats against national security,” Mohammad Maljoo, Parviz Sedaghat, Mahsa Assadollah Nejad, and Shirin Karimi have been arrested, and several younger scholars have been called in for interrogation. Although the news has not yet been officially announced, we are witnessing a new wave of repression intended to silence and intimidate independent and critical voices in public.

Over the past half century, Iranian scholars and intellectuals have experienced multiple waves of wide-ranging assaults against academic freedoms, independent research, and scholarly public expression. After the 1979 Revolution, more than 6,000 faculty and 57,000 students were purged or suspended for their ideological and political dissent. In July 1999, security forces violently assaulted Tehran University dormitories following student protests demanding freedom of the press. During the 2009 Green Movement protests against electoral fraud, 57 faculty and thousands of students were arrested or purged on the charges of plotting for regime change through “a velvet coup d’etat.” The 2021 election of Ebrahim Raisi as president was followed by a new wave of assaults against universities, as some 121 faculty and thousands of students were suspended, arrested, or purged for ideological dissent and, in a later wave, for their support of the Women, Life, Freedom protests. While the shock of these latest violent attacks was fresh, in 2024 the properties of the House of Humanities and the Educational Center of the Sociological Association were confiscated, and resident scholars were expelled.

The academic year 2025 began with a new wave of repression against teachers’ unions, and it now continues with this latest wave of arrests. On November 3rd, Parviz Sedaghat (an economist and long-established editor of several economic journals), Mahsa Assadollah Nejad (sociologist and political theorist), and Shirin Karimi (writer and translator) were arrested, and Mohammad Maljoo (economist and former university professor) has been called in for interrogation. Having been subjected to years of relentless political, professional, and material pressures, these courageous and prominent intellectuals have been at the forefront of maintaining critical and independent scholarship and a staunch commitment to social justice. Their contributions to scholarship and the public sphere are attested by the sheer volume of their groundbreaking publications. In every lawful society that values academic freedom, they would be respected and cherished, instead of being threatened and incarcerated!

The signatories of this petition are profoundly concerned about and revolted by this latest violation of basic rights of citizenship and scholarly independence and demand the immediate release of these writers and scholars.
