Unveiling the cover art for the “Music for the Black Sine Wave” by Payman Abdali

At first, we find it very essential to express the feelings of surprise and wonder that we experienced because of the mass of contribution and number of consultations that we received from different artists for the “music for the Black Sine Wave”.

We believe that Post-Orientalism does not belong to a person or a single artistic current. This is the reason behind our collaboration with ‘Noise à Noise’ label throughout the first year of activity of this community, a label which Soheil Soheili runs and manages, all in a bid to receive works by independent artists, and as a way to embrace pluralism and make interactions. The series that you now know as “Solo for Tar”, “Solo for Qanun”, “Electronic” and “Electroacoustic” instruments are some instances of this mentality, while we have also welcomed different views in the field of Language and Visual identity.

In this community, we believe that there would be no way but to continue accepting pluralism.

We are going to publish different works of “Electroacoustic” music by different composers because of these reasons.

Compositions that you are going to hear may be a combination of “Ney and Electronic”, “Kamanche and Electronic”, and of course, this process is going to include  “Post-Orientalism No. 5” for solo Santoor. Dear people who follow and support us, we do accept the fact that the publications have now taken a faster pace than ever, as you may not be able to follow the releases by the Post-Orientalism community.

But the times will continue forever, and the human-life has limitations in those terms. You are going to be able to listen to the compositions in the future and pass your judgment about them.

As we have already noted in the previous announcements, a very sweet and interesting album by the prominent artist ‘Payman Abdali’ is now ready for publication; he is among the well-known electronic music artists from Iran.

In these pieces, Abdali attains a new structure and view of the methods of use, and the placement of intervals in the modal structures. In these works, you are not going to hear “type melodies” of Radif, or ever repeating performances from different Dastgaahs of Persian traditional music. Sound blocks are not barring themselves into the limited circles that were suggested by many music theorists throughout history, like Farabi, Abdul-Ghader Maraghi and Safi-al Din Urmawi, also not to involve and barr the theoretical foundations of Iranian music Dasgaahs. The sound blocks in the music by ‘Abdali’ is consciously free from the traditional predefined structure of Dastgaah music, namely “Šur”, “Segaah”, “Homayoun ” etc.

We may be able to call the work of “Payman Abdali” an Electronic Post-Orientalism by analyzing this methodology.

Moments and situations in which ‘Microtonal’ intervals are smaller than quarter-tones, similar to how a composer from Western countries may look toward it. The point is about how these intervals are not going to construct the “discontinuity and domination of Dastgaahs”, or in other words, they are not going to change into sacred big tonal intervals.

These intervals are neither considered as micro or macro in the mentality of Post-Orientalism, and they are not unalterable. They are Post-Orientalism intervals.

In this album, Payman Abdali has constructed a narrative structure and form. Sound blocks in the works of Abdali transform from sound into photos, and images that represent a sign from the life and identity of the composer.

The “Music for The Black Sine Wave” can be a beginning for the development of the sense of the art of improvisation of Iran and the East in the general sense. You can accompany Payman Abdali through this journey with different instruments, this can be the instrument of “Kamanche”, “Tanboor” and more instruments.

Different sound blocks from each of the albums can come into life from their unseen withins.

With congratulations to dear Mr. Abdali, we wish success for the players of Iranian music instruments who will reach new boundaries in sound.
