Four Poems of the Bay Area
By Majid Naficy
One: The Scent of Joseph’s Shirt
Should I listen to the sound of water
Or to the call of wind?
The water comes from the heart of the sea
And the wind from the other side of the city
But both have the same message.
These hard days will pass
And the wind that today brings
The smell of Corona
Will become fragrant tomorrow.
Previous poets have said the same thing.
Hafez sat at Roknabad Brook
To see the passage of time
And smell the scent of Joseph’s shirt*
In the wind.
This is the secret of my long walks.
By the San Francisco Bay.

* In this gazal, the thirteenth-century Persian poet Hafez of Shiraz alludes to the Abrahamic story of joseph who was sold into slavery by his brothers, and speaks directly to Joseph’s father, who grieved his son’s loss for years:
Joseph, the lost, will return to Canaan, grieve not
This house of sorrow will become a rose garden again, grieve not
……
Two: Long-necked Goose
Oh, long-necked goose
There you stand
Without looking at me
And repeat something
In your throat.
Do you smell something in the wind
That I can not smell?
Do you see something on the horizon
That I can not see?
I am a lonely walker
And see in these endless waves
But a shapeless shape.
Oh, long-necked messenger
Do me a favor, and tell
What message you have for me.

Three: Daughter of China
Oh, daughter of China
Your loud voice on the cell
Disturbs my peace.
Don’t get me wrong.
I love China and the Chinese.
I have memorized the poetry of Li Bo
And even once upon a time
Have read the four volumes of Mao.
But now on these coastal paths
I want to listen to my own voice.
Haven’t you heard that Lao Tzu said:
To hear, one must close ears,
And to speak, one must close one’s mouth?

Four: Ride Share
“A fuck for a ride.”
This is the response
From a man
To my ad in Craigslist
For a ride share from
San Francisco to LA.
I wanted to pay
Half of the gas
And have a conversation
On the road
About poetry and politics.
I am angry
But will not respond.
Tomorrow I will fly back home.
