Saturday Sessions
By Majid Naficy
They arrive in the twilight of the evening
With their notebooks and bottles of wine
Masood with his thinking dog Nikoo,
Khosrow with penniroyals and guavas from his farm,
Farideh with Sabbath long-cooked eggs
And Emma with Armenian Nazooks and Gatas.
On the counter there is no more room for gifts
And bottles of Two-Buck-Chuck.
Celery stew is simmering on the stove
And two rice cookers are ready
To run as race horses do.
At seven everyone sits down
With bread, cheese and herbs
And wine-dripping paper cups.
From today until the next three months
Mahbubeh will coordinate our sessions.
She gets up and announces one minute of silence
For Mokhtari, a poet murdered in Tehran.
Mansour takes out his notebook
And reads an elegy for him.
Farzad is sitting next to me.
Before people begin to comment on Mansour’s poem
He whispers one of Neruda’s verses
Because he has recently returned from Machu Picchu.
“Majid One” takes Mansour’s poem
To publish it in his “Persian Book Reviews”.
Khalil, who has just arrived
Tells me, namely “Majid Two”,
That he does not like occasional poetry.
“Bijan Two” says “No talk between two individuals!”
“Bijan One” drops his cup.
Mehrnoosh spreads salt on the stain of wine on the carpet
While she mentions the friendship between the poet and the martyr.
Khosrow says: “In this poem, personal has become universal.”
The critics have all commented on the poem
And now it is the poet’s turn
To add to the ambiguity of his poem
With his explanations!
Then a newly-arrived guest is introduced
And asked to read a work.
He reads a part of Walt Witman’s ”Song of Myself”
Which he has translated into Persian.
It reminds me of a long poem
Which I wrote at age thirteen
Inspired by “Song of Myself”
And read at the first session of Jong of Isfahan Circle.
Ali wants to compare the original poem with the translation
But Dr. Enayat tells him:
“Criticizing a guest is against hospitality!”
Mahbubeh asks: “What time will dinner be ready?”
I answer: “ten”, and she asks Davoud
To read his new play entitled: “Los Angeles – Tehran Express”.
Dinner is ready, but Davoud’s characters
Are still traveling between homeland and exile.
Mahbubeh tells Davoud to stop
And the hungry stand in line in the kitchen
With plates in their hands.
Elham starts coughing because of the pepper in the stew,
Mohammad becomes sour because the celery has not been fried
And Azar remembers the food in Evin Prison.
After dinner, it is Koorosh’s turn.
He takes out his guitar from its case
And longing for his wife Roya
sings a lyric written by Partow
Where the word “Roya” is used.
Are the lights too weak or our stomaches too full?
I don’t know. But eyelids become heavy
With the voice of Koorosh
And the guest quietly begins to snore.
Mahbubeh turns the lights brighter
And Davoud finishes reading his play.
Yashar says with his sweet Turkish accent: “My little one!
One should watch a play not read it!”
Kayvan recalls Dilmaqani’s play readings.
He was our first member to die in Los Angeles.
Azadeh likes Davoud’s Persanglish
But Shayan prefers pure Persian.
Maliheh discusses the discourse of “exile” in the play,
Shayda of “immigration”,
Leila of ” estrangement”
And Fariba of “expatriates”.
Our guest smokes on the balcony
And browses through Negin Journal
Which once was published in Tehran
And now in Los Angeles.
Mahbubeh looks at her watch.
It is past midnight.
Everybody stands up, and as Forough the poet wrote:
“There is no sound except saying goodbye, goodbye”.
The door is closed and I am alone with Reza
And empty cups of wine and tea
Left on the piano and bookshelves.
Reza brings the dirty dishes to the kitchen,
Places and wraps the stew in one container,
Puts it next to his homemade saffron pudding,
Prepares a separate dish for my son Azad
And exits with bags of trash in hand.
I put on my washing gloves
And let the running tap water
Carry me to eighteen years ago
When we began our Saturday Circle.
