بخشی از مقدمهء کتاب

غنایی اما مبهم «گفتگوی تمدنها» در ایران آمد و رفت بی‌آنکه درست شکافته شود.  سبب را شاید بتوان در این دید که ظاهراً این ترجیع‌بند بیشتر قرار بود پرده‌ای باشد بر اختلافات خرده‌فرهنگ‌ها در داخل جامعۀ ایران تا پلی عظیم برای پیوند جوامع بشری.  استفاده از واژۀ «تمدنها» به جای فرهنگها، و ادعای زیاده‌روانۀ میدانداربودن ایران در مناظره‌ای جهانی، کل قضیه را مـُدی فصلی و تمهـیدی محلی برای استفاده در روابط خارجی جلوه داد.

 

نبرد مسلمانان خاورمیانه و غرب شدت می‌گیرد و یحتمل دست کم یک نسل ادامه خواهد یافت.  در داخل ایران، ناسازگاری خرده‌فرهنگ‌ها با یکدیگر عرصه را بر هر تلاشی برای اصلاح وضع موجود تنگ کرده است.  غائلۀ اول مهـیب‌تر از آن است که بتوان کوشید آسیاب بادی را ناگهان متوقف کرد.  در زمینۀ دوم، شاید تأملی همراه با شفقت بر تفاوتهای میان خرده‌فرهنگ‌ها سبب شود وجود اشتراک آنها بـیش از پـیش به چشم بیاید.  اختلاف میان اجزای فرهنگی ِ درون این جامعه به مراتب شدیدتر از مناقشات کل آنها با قدرتهای خارجی است.  در ویراژها و قیقاجهای سیاسی می‌بینیم که بی تسکین انزجارها در داخل، هر کاهش اختلافی با دنیای خارج موقتی است و عارضۀ مدام فکرکردن به بیگانه را به عنوان ترفندی مرضی برای پنهان‌داشتن بیزاری متقابل ِ موروثی و حتی وراثـتی ِ خرده‌فرهنگ‌ها به کار می‌گیرند.

 

نگارنده در این کتاب می‌کوشد به چنین تأملی بـپردازد و از دریافت رهنمود برای بهبود نکات اصلاح‌پذیر این متن استقبال می‌کند.  نمایه افزوده خواهد شد.

For the better part of the 1990s, Iran had on its official agenda the lyrical yet ambiguous notion of ‘’dialogue of civilizations.’’  The refrain waxed and waned without much unflattering scrutiny, perhapsbecause it had been meant to serve more as a smoke-screen on domestic subcultural differences than an intercontinental bridge connecting human societies. Using ‘’civilizations’’ where ‘cultures’ might have been the appropriate diction, and the unrealistic ambition that Iran serve as the moderator, or even the guru, in a global debate, gave the venture the appearance of a seasonal fad and a local public relations ploy hoped to help abroad.

 

Nevertheless, the pitched battle between the Middle East Muslims and the West is only heating up and may go on flaring for at least a generation.  Within Iran, the uncompromising attitudes of the subcultures have blocked the way to any attempt to change the status quo for the better.  The former havoc is too formidable a windmill to be brought to a sudden halt. As to the latter, a compassionate survey of the differences between subcultures also may highlight their overlaps. The unrelenting disagreements between the components of this society’s cultural mosaic far outweigh their shared hostility against adversarial foreign powers.  As evidenced by repeated policy reversals, any international rapprochement without an abatement of internal resentments will be short-lived.  The obsession with the aliens is neurotically manipulated to overshadow the subcultures’ inherited and perhaps even congenital mutual loathing.
